You might ask why I say that, but the simple fact is that a tomato plant must have good airflow, so that the leaves do not remain moist throughout the day and then develop fungal diseases.
Fungal diseases is difficult to get established if the leaves are kept dry.
Last season, I bought a tomato plant leaves and Dwarf were so compact that it could also be able to see the leaves or stems of the plant itself. There was no way that it was going to dry the leaves inside the humidity during the night, so it was a matter of trimming away the leaves.
What I did was trim some of the stem, but all leave on others that I just cut the leaves that went back in and around the stem of the tomato plant. I actually removed a whole leaves and believe it or not, you might not even say I had trimmed leaves via as external still looked pretty dense, but at lease, I knew that the inner part of the tomato plant has had a good airflow.
So, here are some tips to make sure that you reduce the likelihood of disease on your tomato plants:
planting plants large enough pieces so that when they are fully grown they are interwoven with each other (there are also other advantages to this)
make sure that the leaves are cut back enough that I'm not touching the ground and a) getting the disease from the ground and b) stay away from moisture in the soil
If you have a plant that is very compact (usually the smaller variety of tomato), where the leaves form a mass of thick, dense, prune tomato leaves off, so that air can get between them
don't water your tomato plants, wet leaves, use a sprayer low or better yet a drip feed hoseSome keen gardeners who live in humid conditions actually put on a very sensitive to their plants or even heat lamps so that the leaves dry up in the morning.
If the tomato plants are on a patio to make sure that if the air is very damp that get some breeze to dry the leaves in the morning having the pot in a position to do this. Saying this, patio tomato plants in pots need to always be at least 6 hours of sunshine per day in each case.
Other advantages of prune the leaves back on your tomato plants is that more energy can go into producing those beautiful tomatoes. Beware though leave enough foliage for the plant to be in good health and tomatoes on the vine are protected by strong hot sun. Isn't the idea to cut them back so much that i actually burn yourself, tomatoes that can happen when exposed to very hot sun all day, every day.
